Artist Surfaces - Stretching Service

Stretching Service

Our Stretching Services

We believe that a properly prepared stretched canvas is essential to the longevity of an artwork. We can attach canvas and linen to any one of our surfaces. We have a team of experienced technicians, who take a quality and precision approach to their work.

Both canvas and linen are sensitive to temperature and will expand and contract in heat and cold. It is critical that the canvas tension is maintained throughout the life of the painting – a weak, sagging canvas can cause damage to paint layers.

Canvas naturally absorbs moisture over time, which can lead to sagging, so most paintings require conservation treatment within twenty or so years of their creation.

Restretching

Over recent years we have experienced an increasing demand from Collectors and Art Institutions for our re-stretching and restoration services.

The most common problems being are paintings that do not sit flush on the wall and stretchers that are out of square making framing and presentation difficult.

These problems have arisen due to an artist's original support being weak or poor quality, if a painting is left in this state longer term problems with the work could develop, causing the painted surface to crack or to tear.

If you have paintings where the stretcher is looking tired or is not up to standard, we can restretch the work onto our own tulip wood stretcher bars - one of our technicians will advise on the best practice. We work with the leading conservation studios in the UK, so can easily arrange for you to speak directly to a conservator should your work require attention.

Through our recently developed artist surfaces workshops we also aim to ensure that artists are fully informed on the importance of selecting the correct supports for their works optimising the longivety if their work.
