Artist Surfaces

Our Artist Surfaces Department
Now in our third decade of making artist surfaces, we are committed to producing handmade supports to the highest quality, working with established national and international artists, emerging artists and MA and BA students.
Our team of technicians consists largely of artists who understand their contemporaries’ requirements and can offer insight on professional practice as well as share new techniques involved in surfaces. We believe the proper preparation of a surface is essential to the longevity of an artwork. We have also developed artist surfaces workshops to advise the artists we work with on the technical problems they may be trying to resolve and new materials that they are experimenting with.

Our Stretcher Bars
Our stretcher bars are hand-crafted using selected lengths of kiln dried tulip wood sourced from sustainable forestry and made onsite at our London workshop. Tulip wood is a low-emission hardwood with very few knots. It is durable and strong - having a low tendency to split when nailed or stapled and is also resistant to warping. We also recommend tulip wood as it produces lower levels of emissions than pine which is more commonly used in other stretcher bars.
