John Jones collaborate with textiles designer Aimee Betts and The New Craftsmen
16 October 2014
This Fireworks Night, The New Craftsmen will be unveiling COLOUR WHEELS – a series of hand-braided brass-framed mirrors – the result of a new collaboration with textiles designer Aimee Betts & framers & art conservators John Jones.
The mirrors combine brass metal frames developed by John Jones product designers, with cords developed by Aimee Betts on a circular knitting machine, inspired by the diverse metal finishes & process of patination realized at the John Jones workshop. “The process of taking a raw material & transforming it through oxidisation was the starting point of my design, & the beautiful patination effect created by the John Jones craftsmen provided me with a colour palette to draw into my textiles practice.” From there the design was developed into a continuous flow of colours to create a visually stunning ombre fading effect referencing the complimentary relationship of colours on a colour wheel. At the John Jones workshop, using rolled brass strips, the frame was formed into a loop & braised at the ends, finished in John Jones’ unique Jax finish which has a deep brassy brown hue. The mirrors come in two sizes, (1600mm diameter & 800mm diameter), & can also be commissioned to new sizes and colour palettes.
After discovering Aimee’s complex textiles practice at The New Craftsmen’s 2013 pop-up shop, the collaboration with John Jones was born, & the designers shared ideas on applying her unique craft to a frame to create a new piece. Our brilliant team at John Jones design and make frames for art every day. The art is always the starting point for our frames, so it’s refreshing that the frame has been the starting point for this creative collaboration with Aimee. – Kate Jones
The New Craftsmen are delighted to be the first retailer to have persuaded John Jones to create a product to sell and we are thrilled with the results of the collaboration with Aimee. John Jones are renowned for their exceptional framing service and high attention to detail and this mirror celebrates that skill in an utterly contemporary and dynamic way – Catherine Lock, Creative Director of The New Craftsmen.
COLOUR WHEELS can be viewed and ordered from The New Craftsmen Shop, Mayfair, from 5th November 2014, and will be available to view and order from John Jones in 2015.
