Winner of John Jones Art on Paper Award 2014
21 March 2014
The recipient of the John Jones Art on Paper Award was announced at Art Dubai during the Opening, Wednesday March 19, 2014. The 2014 recipient of the award is artist Younes Rahmoun, exhibiting in Art Dubai Contemporary with Galerie Imane Farès (Paris), until March 22. The 2014 jury includes artist Shezad Dawood and curators Salwa Mikdadi and Hammad Nasar.
The prize aims to recognise innovation in works made on paper and is open to any artist exhibiting with a contemporary gallery at Art Dubai, regardless of age, nationality and gender. The one stipulation is that the work involves paper. The winning artist is also awarded a cash prize and has their work acquired for the John Jones Contemporary Art Collection in London.
“The work of Younes Rahmoun (represented by Galerie Imane Fares) stood out for us as a fresh and iconic statement that is aware of its own historical context without being derivative,” said the jury members for the 2014 John Jones Award. “It demonstrates an economy of means, using very spare, well thought-through marks that connect to the past.”
“This is a great example of how a work on paper can really hold its own, even next to a large installation piece by the same artist. Our award places emphasis on the importance of work on paper as a medium used by all artists but often overlooked in collecting categories,” said Kate Jones. “We are very happy with the judges' decision to select Younes Rahmoun for our third award at Art Dubai, and we look forward to working with the artist and Galerie Imane Fares.”
The previous winners of the John Jones Art on Paper Award include artists Hassan Sharif (UAE) and Luis Camnitzer (Uruguay) as dual recipients of the inaugural award showing at Art Dubai 2012 with Alexander Gray (NewYork), while 2013 winner Fahd Burki represented by Grey Noise, Dubai, opened his solo exhibition 'Yield' at the gallery in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai on March 17.
