Shezad Dawood at the Parasol Unit from 4th April
20 March 2014
An exhibition of new work, titled Towards the Possible Film, by Shezad Dawood will be on display at the not-for-profit institution the Parasol Unit from 4th April. This exhibition will be Dawood’s first solo presentation in a London institution.
Towards the Possible Film is curated by Parasol Unit’s founder and director Dr. Ziba Ardalan, with works commissioned by Delfina Foundation and Film and Video Umbrella. It will premiere a selection of large paintings on textiles stitched in the 1970’s by Pakistani women, recent neon light sculptures and 2 extraordinary films. The first film gives its title to Dawood’s exhibition. It was shot in a mystical Moroccan landscape which appears almost alien when overrun with otherworldly figures. The second film, A Mystery Play, is set in an impressive Masonic Canadian building and explores Burlesque dance and the performances of Buster Keaton and Harry Houdini. Together the mixed media works explore an overlap of the real and the surreal in order to examine questions across both culture and history.
