Proposal Submission for Create Art Award 2014
05 March 2014
The Create Art Award, orchestrated by Create London, is the largest participatory art award held in the UK. It offers opportunities for London-based artists to enter proposals which benefit the East London community and ‘extend the possibilities of socially engaged practice.’ For 2014, the commission is valued at £40,000, supported by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The deadline for proposals is 10th March.
Create London are committed to spreading the benefits of East London’s cultural hub to nurture less affluent areas. They say; “Our work aims to bridge the traditional barriers of class, culture and education between artists and people from all social backgrounds.”
2012 Create Art Award winner Ruth Ewan’s project ‘Liberties of the Savoy,’ was part of Frieze Projects East. It allowed over 200 young people to descend upon the Savoy Hotel and perform their own programme of events, which they developed over a two month period of workshops. 2011 winners, the collective Assemble, constructed their ‘Folly for a Flyover’ performance and screening space in a disused undercroft of the A12 motorway. The project was nominated for the Design of the Year and Conde Nast Award.
The John Jones Project Space in collaboration with All Change aim to use the cultural redevelopment of Finsbury Park to engage the local communities through a programme of workshops, talks and exhibitions. We take inspiration from organisations like Create London who use art to engage the local community. Information on our forthcoming programme will be released over the coming months.
