Hamish Fulton at Villa Merkel Gallery
27 January 2014
The Hamish Fulton exhibition at Villa Merkel Gallery is set to be a must-see show this spring, showcasing work from one of the most innovative British talents of recent times. Walking artist, Fulton, came to fame in the late 60’s when, along with icons Richard Long and Gilbert & George, he began to explore the practice of direct physical engagement with landscape. Fighting off labels pinned to him such as photographer, sculptor, conceptual artist and land artist, Fulton insisted that it was the experience of walking itself that constituted the artwork, explaining ‘If I do not walk, I cannot make a work of art’, or more simply, ‘no walk, no art’.
Although Fulton considers the walk itself as the artwork, tangible offshoots are made in his recording of the experience with photography, drawings, texts and objects. It is these works that will be on show, half of which have been newly created for the show from his recent Walks in India. At John Jones we have had the pleasure of producing bespoke framing to compliment these fantastic artworks for the coming exhibition.
Get to Esslingen, Germany, from 9th March - 8th June to catch this unforgettable show.
