Chris Ofili - R.I.P. Stephen Lawrence 1974 - 1993
11 October 2013
Our long-time client Chris Ofili has launched a new limited edition print to mark the 20 year anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence. The print derives from the harrowing painting ‘No Woman, No Cry’, produced by the artist in 1998 as a tribute to the South London teenager. This original painting contained a layer of text reading 'R.I.P. Stephen Lawrence 1974 - 1993' which is only visible under extremely lowlight ‘to signify everlasting life’. A photographic image of this largely unseen layer of the painting has been combined with textured detail and a shadowy female silhouette to create a dramatic new piece. The print is available to purchase from www.countereditions.com and all profits raised from the sale will be donated to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.
"The vicious murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 and the pain and suffering of Doreen Lawrence and her family has had a dramatic effect on British life. The painting No Woman, No Cry, the image of the weeping woman, has always been my way to bring to the surface a sense of sorrow and loss … The recent conviction of two of the murderers was a bittersweet relief but the struggle with institutional racism in British life, highlighted in the Macpherson report, still continues."
