On the 19th September The Auction Room became the first London based auction house to host an online sale of contemporary art from the Middle East. Founded by the combined expertise of former Sotheby’s employees George Bailey and Lucinda Blythe, the site allows international collectors to gain previously unavailable access and streamlines the buying process into a quick and efficient experience.
Middle Eastern art specialist Janet Rady commented that the team were ‘delighted to be filling a gap in the current market’ by representing both well know and up and coming Arab and Iranian contemporary artists. Many of the lots came from the acclaimed 2009 Saatchi Gallery exhibition ‘Unveiled: New Art from The Middle East’ and the sale included work by the likes of Ahmed Alsoudani, Lalla Essaydi, Diana Al-Hadid, Khosrow Hassanzadeh, Ramin Haerizadeh, Hayv Kahraman, Shirin Neshat, Ali Shirazi and our long-time client and friend Saeed Khalifa. Many of the works offered an insightful, but at times controversial commentary on the region’s social and political issues, which in some cases have led to the artists’ exile or arrest.
John Jones were delighted to assist The Auction Room in the preparation for their first sale by providing bespoke frame design, artwork stretching, specialist shipping, fine art printing, artwork collection and delivery, restoration, artwork conservation, artist liaison and frame refurbishment services.
