John Jones guide to London Design Festival
10 September 2013
The London Design Festival is set to demonstrate London’s prowess as design capital of the world for the 11th time this September. Taking place throughout the city and running from 14th -22nd, over 300 events including exhibitions, installations, talks and workshops will showcase the very best in global design. Appropriately, as it is described as being ‘at the forefront of the design world’, the Victoria and Albert will once again play host to the hub of the action. Don’t miss:
2013 Endless Stair
Set before the Tate Modern, one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks, this complex public project space will invite visitors to explore its 15 Escher-like interlocking staircases. Constructed of 44 cubic metres of American tulip wood donated by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the towering structure will also act as a unique viewing platform, providing magnificent views across the River Thames.
Moleskin sketch relay
70 London-based designers including Alexander Taylor, Benjamin Hubert and Lee Broom have been invited to participate in the Moleskin Sketch-Relay. The artworks will illustrate this year’s ‘Design is Here, There and Everywhere’ campaign, offering a fascinating insight into the artists’ various individual responses. The results will be exhibited in Galley 220 of the Sackler Gallery.
Lunchtime Lecture: God is in the details
Attend a discussion lead by renowned designers such as Paul Cocksedge and Tom Dixon before setting out on a course of discovery with their specially devised ‘journey of detail’ through the V&A’s collections. Armed with Swarovski lenses, visitors will be encouraged to examine the intricacies of various hand-picked objects that may ordinarily be over-looked.
Discover London’s design treasures with the help of exclusive advice from some the industry’s most prized designers. The panel will disclose their ‘hidden London’ finds by revealing the elite of innovative new design, craftsmanship, technology and talent at their new location in Kensington Palace. The exhibition of around 300 companies will be accompanied by an exciting seminar programme conducted by key members of the design industry!
The largest UK design trade event is anticipating its greatest year yet, expecting more than 30,000 visitors including interior designers, retailers and designers to visit its 20,000m² site at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre. It is also the longest running contemporary design event and described as the cornerstone of the London Design Festival.
