Sue Williams A’Court - Experimental Collages

Sue Williams A'Court, Notes series, no 35

Visual artist Sue Williams A'Court began her career as an illustrator before developing her unique painting practice. The artist's resulting work is now in public and private collections in the UK and Europe and Sue has been working on John Jones art materials for over 13 years. Her latest work has developed from a series of 64 experimental collages inspired by rare tantric images created by anonymous modern painters in northwest India. The images were intended to further the practice of meditation, leading the artist to contemplate the nature of desire and the “numinous” experience within a secular society. Sue began to reference historical images depicting the sublime in nature within her work, using graphite to emphasize a stark contrast between surface reality and a dreamlike place beyond. The artist’s landscapes are presented as a state of mind as opposed to a specific location, inviting the viewer to a place of ‘transition in-between thoughts - impossible to find and at the same time unavoidable’. Sue's work is currently on display in the 2013 RA Summer Show and she has also been shortlisted for the prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize.

"I choose John Jones panels and canvases to work on because I feel confident in the high quality of material and craftsmanship offered – it’s re-assuring to start the process (which can be a long one!) with a solid base so there are no worries when it comes to exhibiting, delivering or selling work later on. I learnt this lesson many years ago making a painting on a frame stretched by my husband that later warped and in the end I brought it to John Jones to sort it out and frame again." Sue Williams
