Robin Friend - Into the Studio with John Jones and Love Art London
05 July 2013
We have been working with creative membership Love Art London to organise exclusive behind the scenes events with some of the capital’s most exciting creative talent! Our October event grants a lucky group unprecedented access to the private art studio of Robin Friend, a talented photographer tipped as one to watch for the future. As an unrepresented photographer, this unique event is an opportunity to invest in the artist's stunning work before prices escalate and discover Robin’s inspirations and unusual techniques, including ‘painting with light’.
Robin explores the increasingly chaotic relationship we have towards the natural world, examining the beauty of both nature and decay. The artist was given his first camera at the age of 5 and the hobby has steadily become a full-time obsession. Studying at the Royal College of Art in London provided Robin with diverse inspiration, however he quickly realised he needed to escape the concrete jungle to create new work which would push the boundaries of the photographic medium. The artist is continuously drawn back to the power struggle between humans and nature, a relationship which is in continuous flux and impossible to predict. Much of his work is created in mysterious and eery locations, such as abandoned mines in the heart of the Welsh countryside.
‘I see these dark, dangerous places as arenas where humans and nature have done battle. Sometimes the men working in these mines had a good day and a lot of tin, slate, coal was excavated. On a bad day, a number of things could go wrong and a man might die. It would have been a constant fight for survival.’
When he’s not negotiating ropes and harnesses at secret underground locations for his shots, Robin produces exciting commercial photography, most recently for the publications ‘Sanctuary’ and 'Art Studio America' which document the studios and inspirations of living British and American artists.
This event is free to attend for all clients and friends of John Jones and will take place on Thursday 10th October 6:30-8:30pm at a private studio in Hackney. Limited places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your spot now!
