Here at John Jones we always look to champion British craftsmanship of the highest quality and are delighted to hear about similar businesses that hold these values in high esteem. A recent House & Garden magazine feature has brought family business ‘Bellerby Globes’ to our attention, producers of beautiful hand-made globes which are closer to works of art than cartography. Based in Stoke Newington, the company is a north London neighbour and produces a wide variety of stunning bespoke designs, all hand-made by a British team. Aside from being experts in the creation of beautiful aesthetic finishes, the team are also concerned about using the best quality materials to safeguard their products against long-term deterioration. Acidic glues in antique globes turn the paper black, meaning hundreds of historical models are now falling apart. As a result, company Director Peter Bellerby produces all of his globes with PH neutral glue and varnishes them with anti-UV gloss ‘in the hope that they will last for hundreds of years’. This approach to materials and longevity is something which the John Jones team adhere to in all of our projects and love to see in practice elsewhere!
