Between the 27th March and 21st April 2012, The Little Black Gallery will be presenting ‘Do Not Disturb’ by Anja Niemi, an exciting young photographer who has recently been featured in Art Review as a ‘Bright Young Thing’ and by Art & Auction as ‘One to Watch’. This collection reflects the artist’s relationship with interiors, and focuses upon neutral and impersonal hotel rooms. These rooms are designed to house visitors but not provide personal homes for anyone permanent, however for a limited time one can lock the door and pretend to own this strange and indifferent place. Niemi left her safe and predictable life in Norway to visit these carefully selected undisclosed locations. After placing a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, the artist shuts the world outside, extracts her camera and clothing, and transforms the rooms into cocoons. In some of the images, her characters seem to be fighting the architecture itself, while in other images her clothing harmonises with the interiors. Niemi lets these characters materialize so that they can evolve and either survive or perish. John Jones are delighted to be working with our long-time client The Little Black Gallery to frame this captivating collection.
