Man Ray

2013

American Modernist Man Ray was a legendary photographer, painter, film and object maker, famed for his contributions to the Dada and Surrealist movements. Our design team were thrilled to have the opportunity to create a stunning framing solution for a striking group of his works in a private collection.

The series arrived at John Jones in poor quality framing which posed a potential risk to the long-term safety of the artwork. Our conservation team removed the decaying hinges from the back of each photograph before the collection was re-mounted onto specialist Artcare unbuffered 100% cotton mount board. These mounts have been wrapped with fine quality black linen and the aperture has been gilded by hand with genuine gold leaf to add grandeur and luxury to the design. Each frame has been cut, joined and sanded in our bespoke wood mill and hand-painted with gesso to a sleek black and grey finish. The works have been protected with our highest quality glazing, containing a low glare coating and an ultra violet light filter and fitted with museum quality backboards and fillets for the highest level of protection. This elegant framing solution is the perfect match for a collection of such cultural and financial value and will provide long-term conservation to the collector’s investment.
