John Jones, 101/ Marcus Lyon collaboration – printed, framed & installed by John Jones
In July 2014, John Jones embarked on an exciting collaborative project with artist Marcus Lyon, to print, frame and install two of Lyon’s iconic series of artworks EXODUS (2012) and TIMEOUT (2014) for an exhibition at Somerset House in October. The exhibition is a collaboration between Lyon, John Jones, 101/, TM Lighting and Somerset House. The pop-up aims to blur the line between public and ‘private’ creative space and endeavours to bring new thinking to the people we work with and the spaces we create in.
John Jones’ experienced technicians printed Lyon’s photographs for the exhibition using large format pigment printers on museum standard, super heavy weight, matt paper. Our technicians worked closely with Lyon and his assistants to meticulously colour match his prints to ensure the highest quality result. The prints were dry mounted on inert aluminium, which has many conservation benefits, and float mounted into soft sanded, welded aluminium frames. Our Design Consultants chose the bespoke aluminium frame design to provide a contemporary finish to suit the artworks. John Jones expert team of installation technicians delivered and installed the artworks at 101/ Somerset House, using the highest quality picture hanging tools and techniques, ensuring the artwork was protected throughout the installation process, with a beautiful end result.
“The John Jones experience is simply second to none. The attention to detail and professionalism the team bring to printing, framing, and installation allows me as an artist to focus on the key processes of visualisation and creation.” - Marcus Lyon
TM Lighting, John Jones’ recommended company of choice for museum standard lighting, lit Lyon’s works beautifully at Somerset House, using low heat emission lights which protect rather than emit damaging light. The brushed aluminium finish of the lighting was designed to complement the frame design perfectly.
TM Lighting Directors Andrew Molyneux and Harry Triggs state:
"Art framed brilliantly, with perfectly balanced lighting, changes the art viewing experience…The flat print can appear in 3D once it’s had the TM Lighting treatment for instance.”

About the Exhibition:
Lyon’s artworks EXODUS (2012) and TIMEOUT (2014) draw on a background of social advocacy, yet his images recall science fiction. In their construction, the compositions allude visually to religion and technology, suggesting vast cathedral-like spaces and the all-seeing complexity of the computer motherboard. Unlike Gursky, who meticulously veils unwanted elements from existing environments, Lyon lays bare the construction that is his methodology. He builds fantastical allegories that revel in their depiction of human endeavour and failure. These are images that strike at the heart of the present but are borne out of a very human, emotional and even spiritual intent.
The pop-up is on display from 24th October 2014 - 1st June 2015, at 101/ West Wing Somerset House, access by the West Wing Reception (10.00 - 17.00 weekdays). Call +44 20 7870 8101 to arrange a viewing.
