JMW Turner - Whitworth Art Gallery
As well as specialising in frame designs for contemporary art, the John Jones team can also produce traditional and antique effect conservation framing for old master paintings. This valuable oil on canvas by JMW Turner has been presented within a bespoke wooden design, finished with gesso by skilled colourists in our London workshops.
The frame has been cut and sanded by hand from high quality timber into a traditional contoured profile. The delicate moon gold and soft grey effect was selected to complement the tones of the artwork whilst nodding to the typical framing style of the period in which Turner was working. Although this design retains all of the traditional characteristics of period framing on the outside, internally it incorporates state of the art conservation materials and technology to protect the artwork from the damaging effects of light, dust, knocks and airborne pollutants.
The frame is lined with micro chamber paper which has the ability to delay the deterioration of objects longer than buffered 100% cotton alone. Containing molecule traps called Zeolites, this technology allows airborne pollutants into the very fibre of the material but will not release them, rendering them harmless in the process. The painting has also been glazed with water white acrylic which contains a low glare coating and a 90% UV light filter for long-term conservation.
This stunning painting is now on display at The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
