Hajra Waheed - Passport Photos
Hajra Waheed, represented by John Jones client Green Cardamom, has recently been featured in Art Asia Pacific, a fantastic periodical covering contemporary art and culture from Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East. Waheed’s rich collages and drawings are developed by referencing historic archives. Raised in Saudi Arabia during the Cold War and first Gulf War, Waheed’s latest series entitled ‘passport photos’ is a planned collection of 198 portraits by Armenian photographer Antranik Anouchian. The images are divided into categories e.g. ‘men with glasses’, ‘women with headscarfs’, and are created with pencil and charcoal by ‘moving her hand like a printer head form left to right over the paper’s ridges’. These painstakingly produced drawings slowly reveal the faces of a disappeared era in Lebanon history. The John Jones Consultants Room proudly displays several pieces from this collection (pictured here) framed by ourselves, and we are delighted for her continued success.
