John Jones has been framing the work of world renowned artist Francis Bacon since the 1960’s. Our team enjoyed developing a special relationship with Bacon over the years, and our founder Mr John Jones MBE fondly remembers how the artist used to arrive carrying his artwork wrapped up in a bin bag! This print on display in our studios was gifted to John Jones, and has been framed by British craftsmen in our north London workshops.
The artwork has been mounted onto a 100% pure cotton acid-free mount board, and presented within a beautiful gilded frame design. Our gilding specialists use techniques which date back to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, applying wafer thin leaves of gold leaf by hand in a delicate process which takes weeks to complete. The final result has been polished to a brilliant shine, creating a grand backdrop to the deep and dramatic style of Bacon’s work.
One of our primary concerns when framing an artwork is selecting the correct protective picture glazing. This piece has been glazed with water white ultra violet light filtered frame glass. John Jones also offer a low glare coating which can reduce reflections within frame glazing. However, Bacon preferred to maintain these reflections in order to encourage the viewer to see and recognise a part of themselves within the artwork. All of these minor details combine to produce a unique framing solution, designed with the approval of the artist.
This frame has been finished with a secure hanging solution and strong frame backboards. These precautions are taken in order to ensure the work is stable whilst on display and protected against inevitable knocks and bumps which can harm an artwork throughout its lifetime.
