Framing a Jonathan Yeo Portrait

Case Study: Framing a Nude Portrait by British Artist, Jonathan Yeo

June 2016

John Jones were pleased to work closely with a private client to produce a bespoke frame for a painting by Jonathan Yeo, Title tbc, 2015, oil on canvas.

John Jones’ frame designers created a beautifully bespoke, sophisticated design to complement the fresh colours within Yeo’s painting. This oil painting was framed using premium hardwood tulipwood and traditional gesso and gilding techniques with a striking result. The gesso finish creates an ultra-smooth surface, to be stained and polished ready to apply hand-burnished gilding to the face. The sides of the frame are stained in a dark blue-green wash, then waxed to create depth and shine, and bring out subtle colours within the work. This contrasting tonal effect allows the viewer to enjoy the work from different angles, without detracting from the artwork itself; the gilding highlights the front of the work, the stained sides create depth.

Our gilders and colourists work with a range of gold leaf tones to produce exquisite finishes, both new and antique. The precise application of gold leaf dates back to the early Egyptians and Ancient Greeks and is an intricate process. The frame goes through a six stage application of gesso and is sanded between each coat to provide a porcelain-like base. Coloured clay is then applied in six stages before the frame is sized, and wafer thin leaves of gold are applied with a fine fan brush.

This artwork is glazed in museum-standard UV protected, anti-reflective acrylic glazing to protect the artwork from potential light damage longer term. Specially stained spacer fillets have been included in the frame to match the frame, and to ensure the glazing never comes into direct contact with the surface of the painting, and the entire design has been constructed to ensure the financial investment of our client is conserved with a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing result.
