Albert Irvin RA
British colourist Albert Irvin RA is not only an innovative and widely influential abstract painter, at 90 years young he is also a true inspiration to the art world! Bert, as he is affectionately known to friends and family, has had a dramatic career spanning seven decades, and the same drive to paint and re-define his artistic ‘language’ still pushes him to work as a full-time artist today.
Albert has been a loyal John Jones client since the 1980’s, choosing to work on our 15oz cotton duck canvas fabric. This museum quality material has an even weave and weight, and is ideal for the artist’s painting style. Albert stretches this fabric over our kiln-dried tulip wood stretcher bars, hand-made to his exact requirements by our skilled technicians. Ever the independent craftsman, ‘Bert still stretches his own artwork supports in the studio today, preferring to ‘crack on’ and finish the job himself! John Jones were thrilled to produce several of the canvases on display in this exhibition at Gimpel Fils, the gallery that has represented him for thirty years.
A painter of Albert’s stature looks to create art using the best materials to protect the longevity and the financial value of his work. John Jones produce these materials for painters at all stages of their career, and we are always happy to offer advice on materials and best practice.
