Framing the Horst: Photographer of Style exhibition at the V&A

The John Jones team were thrilled to work closely with a private collector to frame over 200 photographs by the internationally famed photographer Horst P. Horst for the V&A’s blockbuster retrospective Horst: Photographer of Style open from 6th September – 4th January.

Horst P. Horst (1906-1999) is one of the leading photographers of the 20th century. In his illustrious career, Horst traversed the worlds of art, fashion, theatre and high society and was one of Vogue’s star photographers. Presenting his most iconic fashion images the V&A’s definitive retrospective exhibition also explores Horst’s less well-known work alongside his creative process, influences, and legacy as a master photographer.

John Jones produced a range of museum standard, conservation grade wood and welded metal frames, in a wide selection of special finishes, including gilding, gesso, and colour washes. The frames are designed with conservation in mind to protect the works from long term damage as well as compliment Horst’s superb variety of fashion, travel and surrealist photographic prints and drawings.

One of the chosen designs has a sleek wooden profile that is sprayed with gesso and sanded to an ultra-smooth porcelain finish ready for layers of colour washes and waxes painstakingly built up and rubbed back to give a high gloss piano finish. A gilded inner frame adds a touch of class to these designs to create frames which are reminiscent of the high end fashion of Horst era.

Another design brings in modern clean lines and a bold finish to reflect Horst forward thinking colour photography. Produced in metal and sprayed to a matt white finish these frames really make the colours of the reproduced vogue covers sing. Whilst inside the minimalist frames each print is dry mounted onto an inert aluminium surface to ensure their longevity.
